Let's talk about picking a location for your family session! Here are some things to consider:
- How far are you willing to travel?
- Do you prefer a garden?
- Do you like an urban setting better?
- Do you love NYC and want the skyline in the background?
- Are you super nervous in a very public setting?
- Are you envisioning an open field with tall grass?
+ so much more!
The last eight years I have photographed families at countless amounts of places. I've got you if you don't have an idea on where you want to go! I recommend places that fit your style and locations that aren't a far drive with little ones. If you don't mind the travel, I suggest to make the most of it; I will send over recommendations on what to, where to eat or you can even make it an overnight! This is particular with beach sessions at the Jersey Shore! Also, Some locations work better in different seasons, too! For example, Eagle Rock Reservation in West Orange, photographs better in the Fall than during the Spring and Summer months.
A big factor.. especially when it comes to comfort level is to consider that some locations are not ideal for a Saturday session. I know Saturdays are generally better to schedule with some families but certain locations like, Liberty State Park in Jersey City or Skylands Manor in Ringwood aren't the best options for a Saturday. Why not? THEY ARE SUPER CROWDED! Like, so crowded that finding parking is stressful, myself and my clients are uncomfortable and distracted by all the people and it's hard to avoid having people in the background. So for those two absolutely beautiful locations, they are weekday sessions with me! :)
Another thing to consider and research (I do this on my end).. photography permits! There are so many spots in New Jersey that are free but the bigger and well known spots require a photography permit. I am absolutely respectful of that so there are a couple of New Jersey parks I have a permit for like.. Laurelwood Arboretum.
How have I found all of these places? Some were accidental, some were shared with me, and others I found just by driving around New Jersey looking for new spots!
Now listen... I can promise you that we can create magic ANYWHERE. I mean anywhere.. so I don't think it's totally necessary to find the most picture perfect park because I have proven to have family sessions at an abandoned parking lot with tall grass that photographed BEAUTIFULLY (like the second Maternity image below)! Either way, we will create beautiful portraits together.
