One of the most humbling sessions I get to photograph are Extended Family Sessions. Imagine being in the grandparents shoes and seeing the family they created. It is such a beautiful thing and I am so honored to freeze these moments for them.
These type of shoots are definitely nerve wracking.. there can be anywhere between seven people to twenty! But, when you're lucky enough to work with families that genuinely love each other and love being together, it makes my job easier.
This family in particular were vacationing together in Lafayette, New Jersey. It was the perfect opportunity for them to get family portraits of all of them together in one of their favorite places.. the beach. It is one of the most perfect places for Extended Family Sessions because it doesn't confine the kids. There is so much for them to explore and it's bonus if they really love the sand and water. *Side note* always choose a location your kids are going to love; not somewhere that they may be scared of. For example; if my family did these photos when I was a kid, I would be a nightmare because I was so scared of the ocean! Still kind of am but, that's another story.. haha!
The most important part of any Extended Family Session is the group photo with everyone together. That's going to be the large framed print or canvas that is going to go in grandma and grandpa's house, so they can show off their beautiful family! I always start with that group then work my way down to any other breakdowns; grandparents with their grandchildren, their children, their children with their family... the list goes on!
I can promise I will get the perfect everyone looking over here shot but once we get that done, we get silly and super loving and close to each other.. because, that's what people hire me for! It's my jam and honestly, it's the shots that my families love the most.
