Newborn Photography Tips
You have a beautiful newborn baby that you are madly in love with.. and you want to hire a professional photographer to capture these precious early moments of their life. But, how do you prepare while in the fog of being a new parent? Today's blog post will help you prepare for your future session!
1. What can you expect during your session?
Newborn photography with me, you can expect lots of snuggles.. that should be easy, right!? This is a laidback type of session. There's no rush or pressure. Newborns are so unpredictable so it's important to me that my clients know that we go with the flow. Your baby is in charge! If they need to be changed, soothed, eat, rocked to sleep.. we do it! We aren't on a time restriction, so care for your baby as if I wasn't there :)
2. Where do newborn sessions take place?
I am so thrilled to offer at-home newborn sessions for my clients! It makes it easier and stress-free on my clients to be in the comfort of their own home. No need to worry about leaving the house and leaving something important behind.. like those handy pacifiers or the extra bottle of milk!
3. How do I prepare my home for our session?
Don't worry about how clean your home is.. you don't need to dust or vacuum.. who has time for that anyway while you're caring for your baby!? Instead of "cleaning" I recommend "decluttering". Don't want to see that baby swing in the background of your photos? Tuck it away in a room we won't be photographing in. Want to remember the 500 binkies laying around? Keep them! This is your home.. it's going to look lived in. But, I understand there are certain items that you don't necessarily want in the background. Even if you think it's out of the way.. it'll be best to put it in a closet for the time being.
4. Where in my home will we be taking photos?
Generally the most common places are the living room, nursey or master bedroom. But, honestly.. where I find the best light is going to be the winner! Depending on the amount of natural light in your home we may use multiple rooms. Sometimes, one room is all we can use and that's okay! I use plenty of angles, to add a variety to your gallery.
5. What do we wear for our newborn photos?
My biggest recommendation is to wear what you would around the house on a day you are going to have company over. That usually looks like ripped jeans and a t-shirt or a blouse for women and a t-shirt and jeans for men. Whatever floats your boat! Skip the graphic tees. They can be distracting and take away from the overall image. I want the story to be about the connection between the baby and parents. Rather than reading the words "mom loves me" on a shirt, I want my clients to actually see the love in the photograph!
6. When should we take our newborn photos?
The recommendation is pretty wide and totally up to the parents! My suggestion is the first week or two after birth if you are hoping to capture the true squishy and sleepy newborn stage or even up to a month if you are just not feeling it yet and prefer to have your baby more alert! There is no wrong answer.. it's simply based on what you want captured.
